Things to see and do in Mombasa

  • Book a guided walking tour through the charming streets of Mombasa’s Old Town, where you’ll find stunning, yellow-coloured buildings, beautiful balconies and artisan shops adorned with intricate designs of Arabian and Swahili influences.
  • Visit the iconic Fort Jesus Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was originally a Portuguese fortress. It showcases centuries of Swahili and Portuguese impact on Mombasa.
  • Click photos of the Mombasa Tusks, which are giant aluminium installations on Moi Avenue Road. They intersect to resemble the letter ‘M’ for Mombasa. Situated just a short walk from the Old Town, the tusks were initially built of wood in the year 1952 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth II. They were later covered with aluminium to honour the visit of Princess Margaret.
  • Escape the hustle-bustle of the city and spend some time with nature at Haller Park. Get up close to a variety of animals, such as giraffes, hippopotamuses, and reptiles, at this recreational nature reserve.
  • Spend a day at Mombasa’s Nyali Beach in the city’s north. Soak up the sun on its powdery white sands or lounge in the shade of a beachfront restaurant while sipping on refreshing coconut water and taking in breathtaking scenes of the turquoise coast.
  • Travel south of the city to the gorgeous Diani Beach, famous for its memorable sunset views, where you can enjoy watersports including surfing, windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, and swimming with the dolphins.
  • Take a safari at the Tsavo East National Park to spot animals such as lions, giraffes, zebras and iconic red elephants, all set against the backdrop of the region’s striking terrain.
  • Indulge in Mombasa’s cuisine, a flavourful fusion of Swahili, Arabian and Indian tastes. Famous dishes include Mandazi, Viazi Karai and Mitai.
  • Plan a day trip to Wasini Island to experience a tranquil escape from the buzzing cityscape. Explore the pristine coral reefs, go snorkelling among the abundant marine life or relish fresh seafood at a nearby restaurant. Don’t pass up the opportunity to swim with friendly dolphins while on a traditional dhow boat cruise.
