Things to see and do in Ljubljana

• The Ljubljana River meanders through the pedestrianised medieval part of the city, crossed by a selection of picturesque bridges. The Triple Bridge merges 19th and 20^th century architecture with stone balustrades and lamps, while the Dragon Bridge is guarded by fearsome statues of the winged creatures. 
• Ljubljana’s main square, the elegant and expansive Prešeren Square (Prešernov Trg in Slovenian), links the old and new parts of town. A popular meeting place, its centerpiece is a statue of national poet France Prešeren.
• Romantic 15th century Ljubljana Castle perches above the old city with wonderful views for people who can climb the 100 steps to the top of the tower. There are often art exhibitions here, as well as shows on in the evening. Or you can just relax and enjoy a cup of coffee and a piece of cake in the courtyard.
• With its lush lawns, prettily laid out flowerbeds, playgrounds and woods, Tivoli Park is a great place for a family outing or a stroll. You can also hire a bike in the park and explore by cycle.
• Shop with the locals for cheese, breads, arts and crafts at the Central Market, held inside and outside the Renaissance arcades on the riverside. If you enjoy rummaging for curiosities and bric-a-brac, the antique and flea market, held on Sunday mornings, is the place.

Tips for travelers

Lake Bled, a picture postcard expanse of deep blue water with a mountain backdrop, is just 55 kilometres from Ljubljana. In the middle sits an island with a Gothic church and bell which is said to grant wishes if you ring it.
